| New with construction questions! |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|09:50 pm] |
Hello everyone, my name is Devin, and I have been a pad user every since I started my period 18 years ago (I started at 10...man that makes me feel old :o) For my last cycle I wore some cloth pads that a friend gave me, and I can honestly say that I've totally fallen in love with cloth pads! Where have they been all my life?
I've decided to start making my own pads (since my friend only gave me 4 of what I think are pantyliners), and since I also wear a menstrual cup I really only need pantyliners and maybe a few normal pads.
I've done a lot of research and have decided on a pad design, but I have read about so many types of construction that I'm utterly confused. But that's where you ladies come in!
My first question is this: to waterproof or not? Like I said, I'll be using these pads as backup for my cup, so I don't intend to soak through a pad, but I DO have a PUL wetbag (from my old cloth diapering days) that's just sitting here that COULD be used in the event that I need it. If I don't choose to use it I've read that fleece can be used as a backing for water resistance, and I "think" that would suffice, but of course ya'll know more than me, so here I am for advice.
Secondly, can you tell me if my fabric layout is sufficient? For a pantyliner I've read that I should be able to make do with 3 layers of flannel and a fleece backing. For a normal pad I can use a top layer of flannel, 2 layers of terry, and a fleece bottom. Do these seem adequate enough?
Thanks in advance for your help!

| DXS007 update and potential kangaroo sex? |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|11:28 pm] |
on the off chance you havent been keeping up with the to-dos of my life, well let me tell you about how im putting out a new book next month. NEXT MONTH! this is crazy-talk, chris. well its true. but heres the catch. there will only be 150 of them printed. evar. it will be hardcover and yes, expensive. but let me tell you how stoked i am on this book. but chris, arent you stoked on all of your books? well, sure. each one is like an illegitimate love-child that i get to share with the world. wait. anywho, when i meet people and have to have the 'oh, so what do you do?' talk, i say im a writer. to which their immediate response is, "oh, can i have/buy one of your books?" nice that they're interested but i dont really have a book that truly represents the short-story style that im most happy writing. ok, yes, my first two books (on the upswing, which is sold out and a life deliberate) are that style but they're older and i feel that i am a much better writer than i was back then. dont get me wrong, i love the stories, i just feel that i could have told them better. (but dont let that discourage you from buying one of the last remaining 100 copies of a life deliberate over at deadxstop.com, kisses). my 3rd book, notes from the deep end is sold out as well, my 4th book, selected works 2004-2008 is awesome and all but its all LJ rants and my newest endeavor, REMNANTS is my proudest yet but i only have one story in the damn thing. so... i wanted to write something that i can hand someone without excuses. without having to say, "well, this isnt exactly what i usually do," or, "its sold out," or, "well, this book is like my demo tape."
i cant say the title just yet because i have to make sure i can use this image first because it would work so perfectly with what im looking to do that if the artist wont give me permission im going to change the title of the book. yes, im a nerd. but i will tell you it is 10 stories in the style of my first two books and it will go on pre-sale on my birfday, november 17th.
- and now i will leave you with a video of me running game on some marsupials:

| Photo Blankets |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|08:59 pm] |
|
I looked in the memories, but couldn't seem to find anything about making photo blankets. I have found a few places online with some information, but I was wondering if anyone had actual experience doing this. I want to put some pictures onto a blanket front and possibly sew a fleece backing onto it to make it more cozy. The issue is the photos. My printer at home isn't great, does that matter? What all do I need to do this? Any information is great! Thanks! |

| overlock vs. overedge and some help, please? |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|05:50 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | confused | ] | Hi all:
So I haven't seriously picked up sewing in years, but now is the time, I say! I have a pattern I want to work on, but the first step is stumping me (I know... not a good sign, right?) But I won't let it deter me: I know you guys can help me through!
The pattern tells me to: "Overlock all edges. Do not trim off any of the straight edges. On the handles' curved edges, trim off the 5/8" seam allowance"
First of all, I don't have a serger/overlock machine. My machine does have an "overedge" stitch, however. My research on the internet tells me that I can use this, I think...
So for my purposes, it seems that overlocking here just keeps the edges from fraying up... so it seems that you would do the stitch over the edge of the fabric- like... so the needle actually comes down OFF of the fabric on one edge of the stitch, right? If so, then how would I trimming the edges off of it? Should I actually be doing the stitch 5/8 of an inch IN from the edge? If so, then should the 5/8" line be at the inside of the stitch or outside?
Sorry if this sounds confusing or elementary. Any help with deciphering this would be grand. I've done machine sewing before, but never really used any stitch other then the straight running stitch. This is a whole new world to me. :-)
Thanks so very much in advance!!

| Dad Hat |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|06:37 pm] |
As it starts to get colder I feel the need to start Christmas gifts. My dad always wants an "stylin' lid" every year with a fold up brim, and I've finally got the perfect pattern down so I thought I'd share.

| Man eating blanket! |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|01:57 pm] |

My winter hobby, creating all-your-favorite-wornout-jeans-together blankets, has begun. The deal works like this: friends give me all their worn & torn jeans, and when I have enough (plus any jeans I wear out) I make them a quilt out of 'em. Each quilt is customized to it's donor in some way- one has hand embroidered flour-de-leis, one was done in only dark colors, the one pictured has a lot of courdory in it ('cause that's what he gave me). Each also gets custom batting, such as the flour-de-leis one's wool-batted with old army blankets and water-resistant- he takes it camping. It also weighs 26 lbs and took two winters to hand-stitch the hem because it wouldn't fit under my machine. I won't be doin' THAT again, sheesh! I usually badly overestimate how much fabric I'll need, so the blankets end up queen or king sized rather than full sized. I have to admit, I love seeing my friends (and their children in one case) totally cocooned and passed out cold in one of my quilts. Backing in whatever king sized sheet I've picked up at the local thrift, binding is fleece for the kids and flannel for adults. And truthfully, they're tacked every few inches with embroidery thread, not quilted...

| I finally get around to a surgery... |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|09:51 am] |
Once again, another long time follower, first time poster!
I've tried a few surgeries in my time--namely, cutting a 'hand-me-up' down to my size (my younger brothers are quite bigger than me!), but nothing ever really seemed to work. It was pretty frustrating, as I consider myself quite crafty. Finally, I bought Nicolay's book on the subject matter , and actually, it helped and inspired me quite a bit. I ended up turning a Joe's Crab Shack shirt into a cute little halter... ( Thank goodness for easy instructions! )
